Performing with Confidence: Tips for Drama Students

As a drama student, stepping onto the stage can be both exhilarating and terrifying. But with practice, preparation, and a few insider tips, you can overcome your nerves and perform with confidence. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just starting, these tips will help you overcome the usual stage jitters and perhaps, even shine on stage.

1. Know Your Script Inside Out
One of the biggest confidence boosters is knowing your lines and script like the back of your hand. Take the time to thoroughly learn your lines, understand your character’s motivations, and familiarize yourself with the stage directions. In the earlier stages of your performance, your instructor will go through the script with the class and study different characters(character analysis) and situations (emotional situations, conflicts, etc). This will help you feel more secure and focused during performances.

2. Rehearse, Rehearse, Rehearse
Rehearsal is key to building confidence on stage. Do not take rehearsal sessions lightly. Even global artists have several rehearsal sessions before their concerts. Practice your scenes, monologues, and songs until you feel comfortable with the material. Rehearse in front of friends, family, or even yourself in front of a mirror. You can even record your performance on video and view it afterward, looking for ways to improve.  The more you practice, the more confident you will become!

3. Focus on Your Character
Instead of worrying about what others think, focus on your character’s journey and emotions. Connect with your character’s experiences and motivations, and let their feelings guide your performance. This will help you stay present and focused on the stage.

4. Use Positive Self-Talk
The way you talk to yourself matters. Instead of negative self-talk, use positive affirmations to boost your confidence. Tell yourself that you’re prepared, capable, and talented.  You can remind your entire team that you have worked hard and now is the time to give it all out. Tell yourself that you will complete the performance WITH NO REGRETS! Repeat phrases like “I’ve got this,” “I’m ready,” or “I can do this.”

5. Back Up Everything!
This is a list of things that you and your stage manager can consider creating a backup, in case some things do not go as planned..
a. audio tracks on a separate laptop.

b. surtitle files

c. lead characters – get someone to understudy the key characters

Knowing that your team is prepared will surely boost your confidence.

6. Take Care of Yourself
Make sure you’re taking care of yourself before and during performances. A healthy body and mind will help you feel more confident and focused. Part of your preparation should include getting enough sleep, eating well, and staying hydrated. You need to take care of yourself.

7. Learn from Mistakes
Mistakes happen, even to the most experienced actors. Instead of dwelling on mistakes, use them as opportunities to learn and grow. Analyze what went wrong and how you can improve for future performances. Record those mistakes, and note down how they can be prevented and/or rectified if they happen again.

8. Support Your Fellow Actors
Theatre is a collaborative art form. Support and encourage your fellow actors, and they’ll do the same for you. Build a positive and supportive ensemble, and you’ll all feel more confident and motivated.

9. Stay Present
Focus on the present moment and let go of worries about the past or future. Stay present in the scene, and respond truthfully to your fellow actors. This will help you stay engaged and confident.

10. Enjoy the Experience
Lastly, remember to enjoy the experience of performing. Theatre is a unique and exciting art form, and you should have fun with it. Laugh, learn, and take risks – it’s all part of the journey.

By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to performing with confidence. Remember to stay focused, positive, and present, and you’ll shine on stage. Break a leg!
